So many mosquito repellents are not really effective or only effective for a short time. Others are so toxic that you should only put them on your skin if it is imperative to protect yourself (and then not too often).

Mosquitoes are considered to be one of the deadliest insects in the world. This is because carry life-threatening parasites and viruses and they have a very high rate of reproduction. Every year more than a million people die from the consequences of mosquito bites.

Mosquitoes have been around for millions of years and they have been evolving special abilities that allow them to find their prey more accurately.

They have developed a variety of keen sensors that help them track us down. Here are some tips to help slow them down.

Plant Based Mosquito Repellents

Visual sensors

Mosquitos have a well-developed pair of eyes that allow them to see moving objects, such as humans, and animals. If you are wearing clothes that appear to be in contrast with your environment (bright colours), mosquitos are well equipped to be able to see and differentiate you from the background.

Chemical sensors

Mosquitoes are able to detect certain chemicals associated with animals. They can smell lactic acid and carbon dioxide from 36 meters (100 feet) away. These gasses are common to mammals and birds, as it is a product of their respiration. There are certain chemicals present in sweat, which also seem to attract mosquitos. It’s a fact, if you sweat less you are less likely to get bitten.

Infrared detection:

these heat sensors are the mosquitos most specialized and reliable adaptation. They have developed the ability to be able to sense heat that comes off the bodies of warm-blooded animals, so even when it is pitch dark, mosquitos still have a clear vision of any object that gives off heat.

An insect with a well-developed assortment of adaptations is extremely successful. However, understanding this behaviour has helped scientists to develop several ways of combating mosquitos by developing repellents that confuse the mosquito’s senses and ultimately keep them away from us.

There are several products that one can choose from that address one of the above sensors. Leaf Juice Skincare Mosquito Repellent combats mosquitos via their strongest sensors. It changes your thermal image, making you “invisible” to mosquitos for up to 4 hours.

How do you become invisible to mosquitos?

Leaf Juice’s mosquito repellent uses a special compound called PMD or p-menthane- 3-8-diol, aka Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus Extract. This is 100% natural but not to be confused with lemon eucalyptus oil.

Oil of lemon eucalyptus extract is a specific compound isolated from the leaves of the lemon eucalyptus trees, which is usually applied in form of a spray. This ingredient has earned widespread positive reviews in two studies, which were first published in the Journal of Insect Science in 2015.

Several studies also showed that oil of lemon eucalyptus extract showed had no identifiable adverse effects on the health of users or the environment. Leaf Juice Skincare manufactures plant-based repellents that perform far superior to their chemical-based alternatives.

The research focused on a total of eight repellents that were commercially available, in order to isolate which product was effective in repelling or attracting disease-carrying mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopoctus when applied to subjects hands. They found that a plant-based repellent containing oil of lemon eucalyptus or PMD produced very effective and long-lasting results.

Another study published in the Journal of Insect Science in 2017 carried out another series of experiments with wearable repellents, DEET and PMD sprays in order to determine their effectiveness, again, the plant-based repellent containing PMD was found to be very effective. Almost as effective, as its toxic counterpart DEET.
