Xylitol sounds a bit chemical but it is a natural substance found in our bodies and in fruits and vegetables. It is sweet but contains 40% fewer calories than normal sugar and has no effect on our blood sugar. So why do we find this sugar item in toothpaste?

Xylitol actually helps starve bacteria including Streptococcus mutans which is responsible for causing plaque and cavities. Because plaque causes gum disease, it also helps to reduce this.

Studies have shown that xylitol even helps calcium absorption. No wonder this is a trendy ingredient in toothpaste or chew paste.
